The Golden City
In the absence of a new release from Tortoise (well, OK, Beacons of Ancestorship arrived in June but that was.
. .well, in June), you could do a lot worse than pick up this debut from a quartet of merry Germans. They distil the venerable Chicago collective’s more bouncy moments into an entire album. There are more relaxed and subtle times (San Juan, for example, but even that has some driving thumps) but, for the most part, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster. Mogwai on speed is another image which may spring to mind. Excellent sounds abound - if you’re going to sound like someone, you might as well sound like the best.
