Despite a nice pedigree and history, I have always found Gay For Johnny Depp a bit of a let down. Never being as good as I wanted them to be. This time round they seem to have a lot better idea of what to do with themselves. More rock and noise please? And they delivered.
If you liked the previous efforts then this is pretty much you ideal GFJD record I reckon. Better production without losing that dirt element their sound so needs. But with some sexy/sleazy melody thrown in, “Belief in God is So Adorable” is probably my favourite track on it. Sounding like a QOTSA playing Swing Kids tunes. Elsewhere they have thrown the melodic aspect into the GFJD blender and mashed it up good with their own chaotic rock elements. Throw in a couple of little instrumental tracks of noise and the same riff to link the tracks, some very dancy guitars and lots of screaming/crooning and you have “The Politics of Cruelty”. A very fine album in its own right and the best the band has produced yet.
