Wes Anderson movies are perfect in every possible way and his soundtracks are the sweet, sweet buttercream icing on his movie shaped cakes, from the heavy British Invasion presence in ‘Rushmore’ to the Portuguese David Bowie covers throughout ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ and who could forget any of the original compositions by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh! Needless to say I was buzzing at the thought of hearing ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ soundtrack; from Anderson’s new movie about three American brothers on a ‘spiritual quest’ across India to reconnect with each other.

Disappointingly Mark Mothersbaugh hasn’t contributed to this soundtrack, instead the track listing consists of mainly traditional Indian music, from Merchant Ivory and Satyajit Ray movies. These songs are enjoyable and sit comfortably amidst 70s rock from The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and the odd classical number. Standout track is definitely ‘Typewriter, Tip, Tip, Tip’ and insane little ditty that will make you want to go and watch ‘Bombay Talkie’ (and ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ of course) right away, to find out what the hell is going on! It’s infectious with cheeky incessant drumbeats, bonus xylophone/glockenspiel tinkling and big band brass, plus the lyric “naughty finger”! Brilliant!

The soundtrack is out now and with ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ finally being released in cinemas on November 23rd, I can’t wait to enjoy these songs within the context of the movie!
