Ok, my first impressions when I picked this out of the package Mr Shellsuit sent me was “Oh God, all these bands totally suck…ooo Converge” Upon a second look I realised that only 75% of the bands actually suck, so it should be ok, right?
First of all the CD…It’s a decent compilations, but if you remove Every Time I Die, Converge, Job for a Cowboy, Gallows, HORSE the band, As I Lay Dying, The Chariot & Poison the Well this could just be an album by any of the other bands on the compilation. What I’m trying to say is that most of the bands on this CD sound exactly the same for all intents and purposes. A lot of singy then shouty, easy listening metal. Actually, that’s a good way to put it. It’s easy listening metal. It’s heavy and abrasive but it doesn’t really challenge you as a listener and could quite easily be background music in a horror movie or something with the exception of the aforementioned 8 bands that standout.
Now, moving onto the DVD you can see that not only do the bands sound alike, they actually LOOK alike as well…what a massive surprise that was. To be fair, most of the videos are pretty good, well shot and mildly amusing (If not only for the bands attire) Notable mentions for top quality videos are:
Every Time I Die
Boys Night Out
Alesana (Only for the hotties)
The Chariot
And easily the shittest video on the DVD is Converge - No Heroes. Despite the song being easily the best on the entire compilation, the video is absolutely terrible.
Finally, this sucker is only $9.99 on hottopic.com and 5% of the RRP goes to charity. Now I think 5% is pretty weak to be honest and to make this a proper charitable item you should be giving at least 50% to charity because when you think about it the songs where already recorded and videos already made so the only thing that’s been paid for is packaging and promo which doesn’t warrant 95% of a “charitable item”.
So my message to Hot Topic and all the other people involved in making this CD DVD is “Well done, but give more to charity you tight fisted scumbags”.
