It seems that I managed to get stuck in the Tardis and end up back in the year 2000 at some point in town last night. City 13 remind me of everything that I used to love back in the days when I was first getting into all this heavier side of music. They have quite a Lockjaw records vibe to this CD with parts reminding me of My Deaf Audio and Second Monday. Track for track everything comes together nicely and over the length of the self-financed and self produced debut album they manage to keep everything together. Drums pound, guitars scythe and basslines rumble through in all the right places. However the vocal style of Scott Walters seems a bit mismatched to the overall style of the album. In some places he is in perfect harmony with the music, where in others he seems to be a striking dissonant notes against those of the guitars. This could work well for some bands and I know a few people who would openly admit preferring vocals with such imperfections, yet I think this detracts from the overall standard on display by the other musicians within the band. If you want to take a walk down memory lane circa 2000/2002 then this would be the perfect soundtrack to your trip.
