Therapy? are back with there 10th album Crooked Timber and it’s one of their best yet. Many bands by their 10th offering would have found a formula and stick to it, not Therapy?. Don’t get me wrong the essence is still there, but with a heavier more rhythm driven sound there’s so much more to them and it also means they remain as fresh to listen to as they were when I first heard them 15 years ago.
An extremely enjoyable album to listen to and there are some interesting lyrics too which wash over you as a part of the song or should you want to think about them you will find a deep well of thought and meaning. The title track ‘Crooked Timber’ comes from 18th Century philosopher Immanuel Kant “From the crooked Timber of humanity, no straight thing was made”, this could be taken to mean that nothing is ever perfect, but that’s what I take from it and someone else derive something else entirely. And with each song you really get the feeling that these songs have truly been worked on to get the most out of them.
The stand out tracks for me are ‘Clowns Galore’ with it’s use of guitar made to sign like a fairground ride or carnival attraction and the instrumental Magic Mountain which is quite simply immense.
