I know it was 1975, but you’ve only to look at the cover of this album to know that this band were seriously fucked; Geezer appears to be auditioning for
Brotherhood of Man
, Iommi is a depressed genie, Ward is caught changing into his moonlighting role as Brum’s most frightening Santa and Ozzy has, once again, been pulled from the Acid Queen’s dressing-up box. Incredible that the album makes any sense at all, then. Astounding that it contains one of their best tracks (
Symptom of the Universe
). Unbelievable that the remastering has dealt successfully with the original’s tinny timbre (
Megalomania
excepted).
Black Sabbath
’s most under-rated album? I think so.
