Foreign Country (Single)
Given that Ms.
Courtin is a Julliard violin graduate, you could be forgiven for expecting her non-Classical work to be painfully exact and soul-less to the point of dull devilry. It is a more than pleasant surprise to report, therefore, that Foreign Country is a bright, brisk piece of Americana. Courtin’s voice adds a wonderful French-café feel to proceedings - when she’s not trying too hard to belt things out. She seems to be able to vocalise hot, Summer evenings in Paris without lapsing into irritating pretence at chanson, which affects many. If only she didn’t try and cram so much in. Less is more, girl. Didn’t they teach you that at fiddle school?
