Ganglians

Does the phrase Psych-Folk fill you with as much dread as me?

There are so many terrible excuses for music parading under this title, singing in some terribly nasal voice through 500 phaser with swooshy distortion trying to make up for a lack of knowing how to create or produce interesting of ethereal sounds.

Thank goodness for the Ganglians. They may save summer yet. The album is such that you could easily imagine them not as men, but as a strange race of creatures sent to this planet to spread rainbow coloured party vibes to every park hangout, barbeque, beach day, outdoor evening drinking, everything fun about the summer.

The combination of sounds should be insanity, but there is method in the madness, method & possibly also fairy dust. Layer upon layer of messy sounds that might not make sense, but beg you to understand them. It’s like a journey to a new world where the colours are brighter & the people happier.

I could sit here & write out detailed descriptions of each track, but where’s the fun in that? It would be like looking at the slides of someone else’s holiday, exponentially more boring than actually going there.

Just know that acid pop that feels uplifting & not druggy, vocals that soar & chatter & harmonise like the ghost of Jan & Dean surfing on waves of sonic improbability is as refreshing as it is fun.

This is Psych-Folk, Jim, but not as we know it. I just want to boldly go wherever these guys want to take me.
