I always quite like getting CDs from Bridge 9 to review, even though it is about a 50/50 split as to whether I’m going to really enjoy them.
Some releases tend to blend into one another, being pretty straightforward by-the-numbers hardcore, but quite a few are a bit more innovative. Not necessarily anything groundbreaking, but enough to stand out from the crowd. Fortunately Soul Control is one of those bands.
From the very first chord the foundations are laid. Soul Control takes a LOT from bands like Bane and Comeback Kid. We’re talking fast, aggressive hardcore. What Soul Control brings to mix to set them apart is a noisier, looser influence, from bands like The Jesus Lizard and Sonic Youth. It’s heard mainly in the guitars and drums, which often drift away from the standard hardcore chugging into something much more freeform, with even a touch of jazz to be heard here and there. It works well, too - it’s never too far from the comfort zone of bands like Bane or American Nightmare, and fans of those bands will find a lot to enjoy here. But for those who hanker for something more in their hardcore, this is well worth a listen.
