South Westerly (Single)

The Voodoo Trombone Quartet

Apparently this band began as an in-joke, starting with a band name and only then coming up with the music that the name suggested.

If they had done it the conventional way, they could have also chosen ‘The Sunny D Players’ or maybe ‘Ribena Brass Orchestra’, since the opening horns and bass line instantly gave me an unfortunate mental picture of your stereotypical advert of annoyingly chipper teens quenching their raging thirst. Not the best start.

Fortunately, it turns out to only be a momentary setback, as once the vocals begin it transforms into a distinctly summery pop hit, something akin to a British version of Smashmouth. It bounces along in a fairly standard, but nonetheless enjoyable way, and singing along to the chorus (‘the North, the East, the South Westerly breeze is moving us on”) becomes second nature almost immediately. That’s once you can remember the order the directions go in, of course.
